LANDOUMA
FARE
with Youssouf Koumbassa
Directed by Julian McNamara and Kate Farrell.
Released
by B-rave STUDIO productions.
DVD - 75 minutes
Filmed in Guinea, West Africa, this movie documents
master dancer Youssouf Koumbassa during a journey home to the
Boké region to learn about the traditional dances of his
people, the Landouma.
Some of the dances/rhythms covered are Kombira,
Korda, Tiriba, Sinte, Soli and Coucou. Great extended dancing/drumming
scenes with Youssouf as well as many local dancers. Plenty of cultural
information and beautiful scenes of daily life in Guinea.
Musically we are treated to the drumming of very
unique djembes that are almost never seen in the US. We will also find
the music of a Foulah ensemble, a djeli song, a more modern djembe
ensemble playing around a fire at night, and a wonderful original
soundtrack of traditionally based West African music.
This DVD would be of special interest for dancers,
drummers, and ethnomusicologists but the educational and entertainment
value of this movie can be enjoyed by anyone!
