ANKÉ DJÉ ANKE BÉ
Book (136 pages) + 2 CDs
Djembe & Dounou music from Mali, West Africa - Volume 1
Abdoul Doumbia & Matthew Wirzbicki
This
136 page educational book features over 70 pages of musical notation
and over two hours of djembe and dounou music on two audio CDs. Two
additional volumes are planned in this series. The following rhythms
are covered in volume 1: Birea Dansa, Dansa, Didadi, Domba (Sougou,
Soli), Goï (Sounou), Jondon, Komo, Koredjouka, Lamba, Madan,
Sandia, Sigandi (Maraka), and Woloso. Students can hear the djembe and
dounou accompaniment parts for each rhythm as well as at least one
djembe and one dounou solo by Abdoul Doumbia. A new system of rhythmic
notation is presented in this book. The system is highly geometric and
is intended to be understandable to all students. The accompaniments
and solos are transcribed in the book and the transcriptions are
time-coded. Within each solo transcription critical melodic phrases
have been highlighted. A sample djembe transcription from the rhythm
Domba can be viewed HERE. The companion audio track for this transcription can be heard
HERE (5MB).
Please note that the sample transcription represents only a portion of
the sample audio track. Another mp3 sample can be heard HERE (1.4MB).
