Temne of Suctarr
Released by earthcds partners.
Recorded by Luke Wassermann
Audio CD: 79 minutes - 12 tracks.
This CD is the second volume of an anthology of traditional Sierra Leonean music produced by Luke Wassermann. It was recorded live in 2006 in a swampland area known as Suctarr, and features a style of Temne music called kagbe, which is associated with herbalists. The principal instruments are sangba drums and kongoma (pictured on the front cover). The 12-page booklet included in the package contains color photographs, song translations, background information, and an interview transcript. The group featured in this recording includes male and female vocalists, and professional drummers. The lyrical themes are mostly serious or sorrowful, reflections on the life experiences and living conditions of the musicians, which demonstrate an acute awareness of the poverty and suffering in Sierra Leone, a strong belief in the importance of family, especially bearing children, and a deep faith in God as a provider and savior.
