MUSIC OF SIERRA LEONE: VOLUME 3
Sorie Kondi
Released by earthcds partners.
Recorded by Luke Wassermann
Audio CD: 59 minutes - 10 tracks.
This CD is the third volume of an anthology of traditional Sierra Leonean music produced by Luke Wassermann. It was recorded live in 2006 in the town of Tintafor, and features a blind musician named Sorie Kondi, who will surely become famous inside Sierra Leone with the upcoming release of his studio album "Without Money, No Family." Sorie Kondi is a musical genius and a cultural treasure, able to sing in four different languages (Loko, his mother tongue, Temne, Krio, and English). He is also an innovator; he taught himself how to play a little-known traditional instrument (the kondi) at the age of 15, later electrified it, and developed a unique style of playing it. The wonderfully distorted sound he gets from his self-fashioned instrument is reminiscent of American blues guitarists who went electric in the 1950s and the rock artists who copied the sound in the 1960s. The CD also contains two bonus tracks from a studio session in which the kondi was recorded without the amplifier for a clean acoustic sound. The 12-page booklet included in the package contains color photographs, song translations, biographical information, and a diagram of the kondi.
