Represented in this collection are the four major divisions of
Afro-Cuban culture: Lucumí, Arará, Abakuá, and
Kongo. All but one of the selections are drawn from field and studio
recordings made in Cuba from roughly 1948 to the 1994. Some were
recorded in cabildos, associations formed by free and enslaved blacks
from the same African "nation," some of which have survived to this
day. Also represented are the major varieties of rumba, music of the
Haitian-Cubans, and examples of carnival music from Santiago de Cuba
and Havana. The detailed notes by Morton Marks add up to a thorough
mini-course in Afro-Cuban rhythms.
