CARNAVAL IN CUBA
Recorded by Andrew Schloss in Havana and Santiago de Cuba, July 1980
This
album was originally released in 1981 by Folkways. Here we find
real examples of many styles of music from Carnaval in Havana and
Santiago recorded in the streets!
The African influence in Cuba has been prevalent for several centuries;
Carnaval emerged as a festival of the slaves. In the 16th century the
Festival of God was abandoned in favor of the Day of the Kings, in
which the slaves had a day of liberty, and were authorized to go into
the villages and request gifts. The Festival of God later merged with
the Day of the Kings and became one huge Carnaval determined by the
church calandar.
Re-released by Folkways in small 'to-order' quantities, these CDs do
not have cover art but do include copies of orginal notes. These
are very rare CDs and are not sold in stores. We special order
these from folkways and have them in stock for instant shipment!
