Andrés
Chacón Franquiz “Pogolotti” was born on the
outskirts of Havana near the Toledo sugar factory. Andrés
learned from the master drummers of his day — many of them raised
by grandparents born in Africa — who in turn had learned from
earlier masters. Because of his devotion and talents,
Andrés came to master many drumming traditions, a role that
includes the process of drum-making beginning with the ritual felling
of specific trees. As a teacher, he became a conduit for the
transmission of this lore to future generations. Several of the major
traditions performed by the “school” of Andrés are
found on this CD, giving listeners a rare glimpse into living spiritual
traditions with direct links to Mother Africa.
