This is a very small group with often rotating members, led by Papiro, and very popular in small fiestas, birthday parties, and country-dances in a remote rural area of the Dominican Republic. Papiro, the charismatic leader, while chain-smoking, drinking heavily and sweating profusely, is able to sing and play his accordion as well as entertain with extemporaneous poetry and jokes.
They came to the recording session on horse back hanging their instruments over the saddle. Papiro confessed me that he badly needed a new accordion, as the one he owns is on its last leg, but cannot afford the US$100 or so needed to buy one.
