FET GEDE
IN LITTLE HAITI Three nights of drumming and dancing
on 2 DVDs.
Released
by Ekulnamm Productions.
DVD - 140 minutes
Just west of Interstate-95,
shielded
from the empty
glamour of Miami Beach by eight lanes of highway traffic is a district
with late-night festivites, art galleries galore, and delicious stewed
oxtail. The neighborhood is called Little Haiti, and it might just be
the best cultural scene in Miami. Nestled in Little Haiti's design
district is a wonderful art gallery and performance space named after
the Haitian city of Jakmel. On display is the vodou art of JudePapalokoThegenius. But it is much more than an art gallery; it is
an unofficial cultural center for the Haitian community. In November
2005, it was the site for a multi-day celebration of Fet Gede, the
Vodou festival for the sacred dead.
Three nights'
worth of drumming and
dancing are captured here on this 2-disc DVD set. The feature title is
the final ceremony, "The Night of Bawon Samdi." It has a run-time of
almost 90 minutes, English subtitles for the Creole lyrics, and a
secondary audio track with explanatory commentary by Jan Sebon!
Principal performers include "Ton Ton" Laguerre,
"Ti Rouj" Senatus, and
Yatande Boko, but dozens of other musicians appear as well. Special
thanks to all the musicians and dancers, JudePapalokoTheGenius, and Jan
Sebon!
